I'm surprised more people aren't saying this.

Corpse Party and Fallout 3 comes to mind. Then there's Heavy Rain (I almost burst into tears when I was at the playground.) and Dark Souls.
Not changing this sig until Final Fantasy Versus XIII comes out.

Heavy Rain, by far. The mood barely lifts above completely depressing through the entire game.

And a long shot but Persona 4's ending can border on the grim if you get it wrong, but it's not really a depressing game throughout.
If you're poor, grow a beard.

Second this, and you get different endings too.
Life is like a box of chocolates. Fat people often finish it first.

Definitely go with Lost Odyssey. The whole game is designed around being depressing. There is also lots of short stories in the game to read, and nearly every one of them is depressing in some way.

If you want depressing, check out Lost Odyssey.

Sorry didn't read that you wanted games for PS3 and PS1. Not sure what to recommend in that case. Perhaps Shadow of the Colossus. I always felt sad when I killed one of the giants.

The dark ending in Dishonored almost made me tie a noose.
