When the PS3 was backwards compatable with PS2, did it upscale games to hd?

or at least, make it so it does not look like crap on a HDTV, because you know SD games on a HDTV looks really bad

Im wondering because i want to know if the Wii U does the same thing with Wii games, but never knew if the PS3 did it. I dont even know if its possible.

I never had this problem. I used component cables with my PS2 on a HD TV

PS2 looked fine on a HDTV for me as well.
And the Wii U apparently upscales Wii games from what I hear. I dunno if PS3 did it too.

All PS3s can upscale PS1 games, or PSN PS2 Classic games. PS2 backwards compatible PS3s can upscale PS2 games.

If you don't have the PS3 upscale the video, then the HDTV will upscale any input to HDTV as necessary. Which is better depends on the quality of the HDTV upscaler.

Speaking personally, I have no problem with PS2 games over component cables to an HDTV. I usually use extra Sharpness, to the point of jagged edges with a still image. Once I'm playing the game's built-in motion blur smooths out any jagged edges.

The built-in PS3 smoothing option may be your best bet. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Up scaling is NOT THE SAME as a HD re-release, I know you are thinking that its a similar effect or you would not be asking TC. Keep seeing this in the wiiU thread too.

Yes, PS3 had/has upscale for PS2 games and DVD movies. What this does is add a quick filter so to speak to make the image FIT the screen properly without messing up the aspect ratio. As well as attempts to smooth out the image by lowering its base sharpness (something that can be done on any real tv) and adjusting light/color ect. ect. ect.. In most ways its simply a visual trick so to speak to make the game look cleaner when displayed on a HD TV.

The game is not magically defaulted and upgraded to 1080p, thats impossible without being completely remade.

Have not seen the WiiU upscale in action, but the PS3's is pretty good, actually very good, for something thats not a main feature of the console.
