Most jrpgs always been anime-ish. They just had more of a late 80s to early 00s like feel to them. Animes are different in 2012. Even then Anime isn't childish there are plenty of mature anime out there especially with mature designs. Dark Souls is more like western games than anime/manga-esque style. I just find it funny how people say the older games weren't that anime-ish when they actually are.

List of older non Anime JRPG (PS1 era):

Asuncia
Zill O'll
Shachou Eiyuuden Legend of Condor/Eagle Shooting Heroes
Boundary Gate
Weltorv Estleia
Brightis
Kuro no Ken: Blade of the Darkness

if i go through the story, i'll probably find them to have typical things that i can find in various anime.

also, Legend of Condor title was based on TV dramas and movies.... i'm sure to find something that at least several anime have..

Love all the generalization's of anime going on. You guys do know it's not one single genre right? it encapsulates tons of styles and tones within it and isn't all for kids. Guess it's hard to break that American bias that's beat into your head as kid "cartoons are for kids".

I'll admit I don't watch as much as I used to but that's because a lot of the shows that are made aren't for adults and I've seen everything I already like. That being said there is a few shows that pop up every year worth watching and it's really always been that way. It's not like in the 90's only 2-3 shows were made every year that were masterpieces and the rest were god awful OVA's, it's just that's all we got to see. Now we can watch any show instantly within hours of it airing in japan. It's not that it's gotten worse, it's that we have access to ALL of it now and we can sit back and go "oh most of it's just mediocre like every piece of entertainment".

We don't have a that filter we did back in the day when companies only bought licenses to really good anime or really really cheap (usually bad) anime and left all the "meh" stuff behind. Thanks to the internet and streaming services we have to make our own filters and sift through all the "meh" stuff ourselves and for a lot of people that just isn't worth the time.

Personally I just wait to the end of the year and check out a bunch of top 10 lists and grab a few shows I see on more then one list and check those out. January always becomes my anime month every year ;p

there's also very obvious phases... one phase in the past was a Mecha fad... recently it's become a moeblob phase.. but i think that's phasing out

Hahaha oh wow that was a funny joke, you should be a stand up comedian.

Bokurano <-- teenage target audience. but fairly mature themes.

Saiunkoku Monogatari <-- mid-late teenage girls would love this. ppl who love dramas set in ancient asia type settings would also love this.

Hana Saku Iroha <-- drama that's probably targeted at mid teen girls but it's refreshing enough for anyone to enjoy.

Mnemosyne Musume (Daughters of Mnemosyne) <---- you would not dare show this to a little child. and no it's not hentai either.

Tiger & Bunny <--- probably a mid teen audience. it's for ppl who like superheroes.

Minami-ke <-- comedy of real life with things for all ages

Juu Ou Sei <-- mid teen boys or older. but people older than teens and both genders can enjoy this just as well. has themes that are far more mature than something you'd call "childish themes"

Seirei no Moribito <-- if you enjoy an excellent story and an ancient asia type setting with good action and good characters, this is for you. it's one i would recommend for everyone. though kids won't be able to understand some of the things in here that well...

Guin Saga <--- an epic. i'm not sure kids would be interested in these sorts of stories.

Last Exile <-- perhaps mid teen... everyone can enjoy this story. especially people who are teens or older.

Bartender <-- about a bartender of a special bar where he's so good that he can find a special drink to satisfy a person's woes and worries. goes philosophical as well. nice little episodic stories. i doubt you would show this to kids... it also comes with recipes for that episode's drink(s)

Code Breaker <-- perhaps it's geared for a female audience that loves action. this would mean it has to be late teen or at least the second half of teenage years or older.

Btoooooom <--- probably a mid teen target audience. ppl who play FPS would be able to enjoy this.

Kino no Tabi <--- kids will NEVER understand the stuff this show talks about... and i doubt there will be many teens who can understand it either...
-------------------------------------

so far, i only talked very generally about those titles (except a few)

All of them are childish, even the Guin Saga anime was animized from a novel that is actually mature and serious. There are five volumes out right now, read them and you'll see.

The only anime that isn't childish is Berserk, which went as far as taking out everything childish found in the manga.

I don't get why this discussion of animes being "childish" are brought up. They're cartoons, of course they're going to be childish.
