How long do you wait until getting a new console?

At least 4 years. The PS3 was the only exception. I won't be making that mistake again.

In retrospect, I could have waited a bit longer myself. About a year even.

I'd say I either get it day one, or wait about a year. It depends on the system and what else I have at the moment. If I wasn't completely broke, I'd have probably impulsively acquired a Wii U at launch, despite doing the same with the Wii and regretting it the same day... The controller is good time though...

Usually launch if it's a console I want or the Wii U. Except the PS3. Didn't get one of those til 2008 due to MS being involved in fraud.

Normally I wait a year or so, but got my ps3 when it finally dropped to $300. PS4 I may say f*@# it and buy it launch if its $400 or lower, while my brain tells me wtf are you doing idiot.

I got a 360 about 1yr and half in. It broke on me once. Sucks having to get it repaired.

I got ps3 just 3 weeks ago. Got a red version with a whole bunch of cheap used games. I got the following games for 63 bucks total:

Uncharted 3 GOTYE
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time
MGS 4
Assasins Creed 2
Uncharted 1 and 2
Killzone 2
God of war 3
COD Black Ops
Mass Effect 2

Bought these used online but not on great deals like the ones above
Sleeping Dogs
wwe 13
NBA 2k13

I kinda like buying systems late because you can get solid games for so cheap.

I dont feel guilty buying the ps3 so late because wii U just came out and people arent even sure if its more powerful than 360 or ps3. The lack of power on the wii u combined with the solid ps3 library that can be had for cheap made it easy for me to make the decision to pick up the system this late. I also have too many wii games that i havent finished.

When there's that 1 game I have to have.

Probably this. I've usually pulled the trigger on a new console purchase when there's a particular game that I'm just dying to play. A price drop also helps a lot, and so does a growing library of games (a single game may drive my decision to buy, but I need it to be backed up by a big library of games I'd have interest in). I never buy at launch, but there's no particular time frame after launch that I buy. It always kinda varies. I got my Wii about 1.5 years after launch, my Gamecube about 6 months after, 360 about 5 years after, PS3 also about 5 years after. I don't remember the timing on my older consoles, since it was many years ago and they were gifts rather than my own purchases.
