The potential is definitely there, but not all games are art (in the same way that no one could claim all films are art etc.)

I think once games are even more engrained into mainstream culture, and people like Roger Ebert stop trying to proclaim videogames to be nothing more than childish garbage, then there'll be no reason why they won't be considered a valid art form. The Smithsonian was running a whole exhibition this year about the art of videogames, so clearly the perception is starting to change, however slowly.

Yes. In the same way a novel, painting, picture, movie, song is a form of expression, video-games are a form of art in that they are essentially created.

Interesting discussion on "games as art", for anyone interested. It's only the highlights, but still worth a watch.

I honestly wouldn't know. I would say that they have artistic aspects, and have the potential to be a very strong story telling medium, but in general they just aren't up to the same level as film, literature etc

I'd say that some games are more artistic than others.
Then again some movies/books/tv shows are more artistic than others.

Even bad art is art.

People think of art as a lofty title bestowed only upon the greatest of creative expressions; hence, art must be good. That isn't true. Art can suck, just like Uwe Boll's films. But if you go with that definition, then you can't blanket-label literature and film as art -- you'd have to do it on a case-by-case basis. I stand with the idea that any creative output is art.

Saying video games are art is as stupid as saying gaming is a sport.

He said, with nothing to actually support his opinion other than a self righteous sense of thinking their opinion is a fact and that diagreers are stupid.
