It doesn't look to me like Japanese people like to play PS3 games anymore

Hell, games in general anymore

People like to quickly put the blame on Japanese made games being "bad" this gen, but if Western games were so "much better" than logic dictates they would sell well there too as they sell well across the rest of the world.
But they don't.

There's 127 million people in Japan. As a comparison to those figures, there's 311 million people in the U.S.
Some people here would have you believe that Japanese are "crazy" about video games and Anime but that obviously isn't true if the average video game can't even break 100K in sales.
It's now very rare for even a AAA game (only a select 2 or 3), be it Western made or Eastern made to break a million sales in Japan.
Call of Duty Black Ops I for example did 4.2 sales in the U.S and 1.2 in the U.K. but sales in Japan were marginal.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Dragon Quest X barely broke 800K in Japan for example...

I think thats why theres this new shift to smartphones because the philosophy behind that is that "Everyone has a phone" and "its cheap to make"

I smell North America "Master Race" people coming into this thread soon but I'll just say this...

In Japan they are also making about 50 times as many games as we do over here so they have a hell of a lot more variety in what they want to play whereas NA doesn't. And where did you get those sales figures from for half that stuff anyway?

J site or NA site, because NA can't record J sales any better than I could :/

But it's not really generalizing if you're going by sales numbers. Sales numbers kinda don't lie...
I just think there's a lot of stereotypes thrown around about Japanese people based on what limited stuff we see or get thrown at.

Usually either Famitsu, The-magicbox, Gematsu or Siliconera

First off, Japan is a pretty hard country to live in, stuff is very expensive (games for example sell for approx $90-100). It's extremely rare for a game to reach 1m sales in Japan, but 500-800k definitely happens.

2/ It's true that even in Japan, there aren't as many "otakus" (people who like anime and video games) as you think, they are in fact a minority. It's more like a subculture.

3/ You have it backwards, people don't shift to smartphones because console gaming is declining, it's the other way around. Console gaming is declining BECAUSE people are shifting to smartphones. Mobile and social games are the next big thing in Japan now.

They're more into handhelds and mobile gaming.

Oh god ya the games are insanely expensive some stuff gets even more expensive than that :/ I've seen collectors editions of some shows and games going for 50,000yen. So give or take $600. Though some stuff like PSP, and DS/3DS games are still only around $50-70 which is high but not awful

These two statements can't both be correct.
