The problem I have with JRPGZs is how for the most part, they are mislabeled. Almost all of them have absolutely NO roleplaying elements, but they get called RPGs because originally, back on the NES, the games were made with elements used in RPs, but very few of them because of system limitations. As consoles evolved, Japanese developers evolved the genre without adding any RP elements to the games, but focussed on other things like story and characters. While western developers actually tried to make video game RPGs closer to actual role playing games by adding elements that involve roll playing.
Which is better? hard to say, different genres. I love WRPGs, and lately they've definitely been stronger. But past generations, JRPGs were usually the stronger genre, with WRPGs being far and few between since consoles were limited and WRPGs need a stronger backing, so they stuck to PCs, where sales weren't as strong.
I'd say WRPG is the better genre, but there are more great JRPGs than great WRPGs because of the mass quantity of them .
