Yea in my opinion, FFXI Online really is the greatest videogame of all time that a Playstation console ever received, people have spent years playing it, and it just goes to show how MMORPG is the natural superior evolution of RPGs in general.

Whereas RPGs are about beating the "story", usually with premade MC, and a few side things to do here and there,
MMORPGs are about "living" in that world and carving your own way of life, more freedom, more natural social interaction with other players/adventurers living in that world too besides npcs. And your adventures are about YOU, as well as friends, comrades and allies you meet. Your experiences are your own personal experiences. You set your own goals, you choose how to exist in the world, and how you contribute to the community and world as a whole.

Even Sakaguchi during FFXI Online's early time, said that MMORPG is really how Final Fantasy is meant to be experienced and take the next level in depth, immersion, expansion and personal freedom into far greater and amazing levels that mere RPGs cannot reach.

FFXI Online is also the most profitable, most played and most expanded upon in the franchise. Partially thanks to the subscription model that helped accumulate its updates, new content, new locations and overall new story expansions to make the most massive and extraordinary FF world and videogame experience of all time.

While it is the most difficult FF in the series, it's also the most rewarding. No videogame concept is better than a world where players choose what they want to be, and share that world with other players that is filled with so much danger, mystery, history, and atmosphere, as well as millions of different details that only mmorpgs provide as standard features. Even your heroism could be acknowledged by other actual people around you instead of just npcs.

Even despite later FFs pushing graphics further (FFXIII), they are tiny hollow shells compared to the universe that is known as FFXI Online. Even more immersive rpgs like Skyrim are a lonely and lifeless world compared to FFXI Online.

That is why with FFXIV ARR being developed for PS3, many PS3 gamers could discover how much better a FF mmorpg is compared to FF rpgs and rpgs in general.

And ever since the team reform, FFXIV is in the right hands with the right direction for its accessibility, performance and gameplay;
while not abandoning how quality subscription based mmorpgs can provide an experience,
immersion,
massiveness,
atmosphere,
expansions,
heroism,
journeys,
social interaction,
customization,
creation,
exploration,
way of life,
and freedom that RPGs and other videogame genres can only dream of.

Just like FFXI Online proved mmorpgs can work and be successful on PS2,
so can FFXIV ARR on PS3 (and even more so with PS3 being more mainstream in online gaming and online subscriptions, plus with HDD and network being built in standards for PS3 consoles, FFXIV A Realm Reborn can really earn its own PS3 community and success, especially with crossplatform play and fresh servers to keep even PC players equal to PS3 players launch progression in those servers. FFXI had crossplatform servers too, which is a win/win situation for both platforms.

So now FFXIV ARR has a better chance to become even more successful than FFXI Online.

And naturally if there is something PS3 gamers feel is worth subscribing to, they will get what they pay for. :)

I personally disagree, but I definitely think you have some valid points and your opinion is definitely justified. I've never played FFXI since I'm not a fan of MMO's and I don't plan on playing FFXIV either. I have heard amazing things about FFXI though and FFXIV is starting to look bloody good as well. The problem with FFXIV was that it was released way before it was finished for some insane reason. I'm glad to see that SE decided that it deserved to be finished and got to it. They've made a damn good recovery from that mistake.

I wouldn't call it the greatest, but it is one of my favorite FF games for the community, plus the story, music, world, characters and lore.

FFXIV was released before it was finished because the initial team was inept, they were trying to make it as different from FFXI as possible and completely botched it.

In my opinion, FFXi is the best Final Fantasy game ever made. It's a shame that the game is totally different now, but back in the day this game was a true test of resourcefullness. The feeling of overcoming all obstacles and finaly getting that Raja's ring back in 2006 is something that is unequalled in any other Final Fantasy game. You are inside Final Fantasy like no other game when you play this.

Hopefully Final Fantasy XIV will bring back some of those challenges to make yet another awesome game.

I love that FFXI did its own thing and wasn't just another MMO with the Final Fantasy name.

You're out of your mind.

It's atrocious as far as MMORPGs go and there are much better online experiences on Playstation.
