Do you risk damaging your PS3 by installing a bigger harddrive?

Also, is this a good "How to" guide on installing a new hard drive?:

I'm just curious. I don't want to be using a guide that's not good.

It covers everything. It's fairly basic but nothing there is incorrect. There are better guides but this isn't a bad one.

Alright, thanks. Also, can you tell me where I can/should buy an HDD for my PS3 online?

Depends to some extent on where in the world you actually live. In general terms, though, there's no one particular online site that is definitely better than all the others. Check places like Amazon, Newegg, and/or your local equivalent sites, and look at well-reviewed hard drives in the price range you want to buy one at, and get the site that's going to sell you what you want for the lowest price.

I see. Will electronic specialty stores such as Best Buy carry PS3 compatible HDD devices or will I be forced to go online? Also, Mass Effect 1 for PS3 is a locked save. Are you sure that this will transfer on an external HDD and be able to go on a new and bigger HDD for PS3?

Every external USB hard drive is PS3 compatible or can be made PS3 compatible by plugging it into a computer and getting the computer to format it (format to FAT32, don't use the Windows format tool to do this, use another formatting tool such as Swissknife or, if you have Vista or 7 or 8, EASEUS Partition Manager).

Yes, totally sure. I've upgraded hard drives several times on several PS3s, the locked files will be backed up, and will be restored if you're restoring to the same PS3 (the fact that it's a different hard drive won't matter - only the PS3 itself).

I see. How do I format an external HDD to FAT32? I have Windows 7 and I'm new to this.

Also, how is this HDD for a PS3?

Can I go better for a cheaper price or is that the best that I should go for?

My preferred formatting tool is EaseUS. It's free and you can download it from here:

http://download.cnet.com/EaseUS-Partition-Master-Home-Edition/3000-2248_4-10863346.html

It's a partition manager, which means that it can do way more than format a drive.

To format a drive:

1. Download and install the application.
2. Run it.
3. Select "Partition Manager"
4. Find the drive that you want to format. Be careful. The application won't mess anything up without you telling it to and confirming it, so please don't be put off by that, but do be careful - you are about to format a hard drive and you definitely do not want to be picking the wrong one. Check what it says under "File System". If it says FAT32, you're done. Skip all the other steps.
5. Right click on the drive and choose the "Format Partition" option.
6. Give the partition "(in this case, the entire drive will be one partition) a name. Call it whatever you like that it'll accept. It doesn't matter so much.
7. For "File System", select "FAT32".
8. Hit OK.

Formatting should happen. For a new drive (which presumably will be empty or nearly empty) it shouldn't take long. When complete, the drive should be formatted as FAT32 and recognisable by the PS3.

Note that you only have to do this for an external drive (the one that you're backing up to). You won't need to do this for the internal drive, the PS3 will do any formatting necessary.

It'll work (reviews on that site will confirm that). I can't say much more than that.

I don't regularly buy hard drives and I don't live in the US. It's essentially impossible for me to say whether that's a good price. I suspect from comments from other posters in other topics that you could get a cheaper drive than that, or that you could get the same drive for less, but that's something for others to answer.

Looks like a great choice. I have the WD equivalent (same specs) and am very happy with it.

Alright. Good to know. One more final question:

http://asia.cnet.com/upsize-your-ps3-hard-drive-62032875.htm

Is that a good walkthrough to use to replace the HDD?
