I mean come on, I've seen Ghibli films with mature themes and older lead characters back in the day. This "Let's make everybody 12 year old kids" trend in Japan is starting to really get under my skin. They are pushing away everybody except mindless otaku who buy anything Anime related.

We could have easily had a badass looking anime game like this from Ghibil.

How many protagonists in a JRPG are actually 12 or under? Hmm? Think about it.

Anyway, Oliver is 13.

I'd be more concerned with the fact that you're so focused on the fact that it's a kid.

Kids have magicial adventures, so the kid protagonist, suits.

Japan has always idolized youth. It has been this way since the 80's and is in no way a "modern" thing.

Many magical adventure stories feature children. Harry Potter for example? Narnia? Alice in Wonderland? Children have a sense of wonder about the world that many adults have lost. As a storytelling tool, it's much easier to convey a sense of wonder to your audience by telling the story through a child's eyes. This is common in ALL cultures.

Princess Mononoke is a great film, but it's hardly representative of the entire Ghibli canon, which is composed heavily of young children. Your argument is rather flimsy.

I actually really like playing as a teen, I like teen animes as well, especially the highschool slice of life. The main character of NNK is too young for my tastes though in a main character, give me an angsty 16/17 year old any day of the week.

Surely you're still a teen yourself then, are you not? That's really the only period in my life when I can remember liking anything that involved teenagers.
