C/D: Michael Pachter is a threat to gamers

What he suggests is just barely short of exploitation.

If the game uses P2P (Peer to peer) play, the server maintenance cost should be covered by the retail price. Especially nowadays, when they feel it necessary to charge extra for access the online functionality for used copies. That is what that price is supposed to cover, or that is what they say anyway.

With P2P, the actual online play functionality doesn't use their servers other than to identify and connect to other players. All it does is save you from putting in the IP number to the host manually.

The actual gameplay is handled by a users system (The host) and each users internet connection (Sending and receiving data from the host).

If it uses dedicated servers with constant updates (Like a MMO), then it would be warranted to implement a subscription fee.

This is what they're attempting with Call of Duty Elite and such, but seriously, it's just limiting content on the user end to serve it piece meal through their service and tracking user statistics (Which could just as easily be stored by the client, if it weren't for jerks hacking them).

Features are not added, but taken away, unless you pay premium.

Multiplayer has been free for almost every game that has it (once you've bought the game I mean), and that's how it should be, the company should get a one of payment when you buy the game and then nothing more, the same way it is with movie DVDs, music CDs, books, etc.

There are people today who still play Doom's multiplayer, eighteen years after the game was released, and id don't get a penny from it. And id don't moan about it.

Let them charge those sheep.

No, as firstly it would be unfair, and secondly it sets a precident that could (and will) be used by other companies.

Michael Pachter is a moron when it comes to video games and is only right 1% of the time. He is like the crazy man in the street shouting random crazy things to any one who will listen.

Just pay him no mind.

"That's just like the people who play World of Warcraft and never stop, yet the World of Warcraft guys are paying $180 a year, and the Call of Duty guys are paying $60. So who's got a better model?" he said.

I'm not saying he's right, but he definitely has a point...

lol very funny read that guy is an idiot.

Lastly, Pachter predicted that acquisitions are on the horizon for Activision. He said the publisher is likely to go after Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two first because "that fits in very nicely." He also said Activision "should" buy social game studio Zynga, though Pachter said he does not think Zynga CEO Mark Pincus will sell.

that had me rolling. take 2 is making serious moolah and he thinks they will sell but zynga is going broke and is being investigated for insider stock trading and they wont sell. ROFL

What if Pachter is actually the greatest genius we never knew we had? Being the brilliant analyst he is, he surely noticed that his predictions are always wrong. So what if that is his plan? He carefully guides the industry down the paths he desires, by making predictions opposite of what he really wants, knowing that the industry will do the opposite of his prediction, and thus, do what he really wanted them to do. Pachter is the hidden puppet master of the games industry!
