But isn't 900 million yen like 300 dollars US?

It's like $1,000,000

Remember guys, Apple just recently won that case over patenting a square with round edges.
Anything is possible.

“A mechanism to manipulate the characters by touching the screen with your finger or pen.” Sega is claiming that “two patents acquired by the company has been compromised”.

Ah crap, Rovio Entertainment better look out, Sega might try to get them for Angry Birds!

Sega....you've been a pretty kick ass publisher this gen.

But I've gotta call bull**** on this one. There is no way they win this.

Who wants to bet this is a cheap sega plan that goes like this.

Sega sues
Sega Wins
Level 5 Can't pay
Sega takes in Level 5
Sega now owns Level 5's games and workers.

They lost Platinum Games they're obviously hurting for another good publisher. Perhaps this is a cruel method of getting one.

If their patent is truly infringed, then they should be suing.

Always annoying to read comments how people think they're stupid for doing what they're doing, when they're simply protecting their property.

If they win, then it was infringed, if not, then it wasn't enough.......but if they feel it is, then they should be doing this.

You would.

The problem is that A LOT of games use touch controls to control a character and what is known of Sega's patent is so non-descript, they could sue anyone that made a game with touch controls. Also, from another site:

"No further details about the complaint were published - including, curiously, how SEGA's patents differ from control mechanics used by DS games from other companies. Even stranger is the idea that a patent for game control, on a console manufactured by Nintendo, would apparently belong to SEGA in the first place."

That is why people are more or less saying "Sega, WTF?"

geez this world is crazy !!
really, even buttons of the icons have patents even the behavior of drop down button or even the behavior in sliding the next page have patents....

come on... this will kill every company or even start up companies

Only solution is to put International Standardization so that everyone is happy

That's just it., people are saying "SEGA, WTF??" without knowing the specifics. Just once i'd like to see someone with enough maturity to say "ok, well I don't know the specifics but i'll reserve judgement until I do"

I agree that many many DS games use the touch interface, so it's clear that it's something really specific.

as a poster said above, Apple sued for the curved edges on their phone, and succeeded.
