Am I remembering wrong or wasn't the primary complaint regarding XII the whole "battle system plays itself" deal? Seems they didn't listen because they made it even more hands off the next time around.

I never got that reasoning. Just because Square Enix made it so that you don't have to find Cure on the Abilities list makes the battle system worse? What kind of awful argument is that?

you're a coach who says which character plays which role (paradigm), but they play alone. auto-battle makes normal selection obsolete. you have rarely something to choose from anyway within a certain role, so it wouldn't benefit much anyway to choose manually.

it's simply a terrible system to begin with.

But what makes that different from the other FF games? I don't recall pulling off something extravagant for each fight. It's usually:

*see's battle transition*

Me: Oh damn, a random encounter.

*smashes X until I win*

FF games never had in-depth battle systems. They never really made you think as much as people here are tricking people into believing. If you want games that'll make you think, then you should probably buy Starcraft or Civilization.

"mash x until I win" is because you're too powerful so win with "ATTACK" - the game doesn't make a selection for you.

in this game you mash "x until you win" if you like it or not even for bosses.

It's true that FF games never had a _lot_ of choices to make in the battle system but that doesn't mean that narrowing it even further is a good idea. The fact that you _can_ mash X to win in previous games doesn't mean that's all anyone ever did or wanted to do. What's the next step, replace battles with cinematic cut scenes? Welcome to FF the movie.

FF13 (and 13-2) sacrificed all the good elements of the other FFs for more flashiness. it was a turd, both in gameplay and story / characters.

Vanille was the only redeeming character of the otherwise, overly cliched cast.

it wasn't even a RPG for gods sake, you're LIMITED by story progress, seriously, WHAT THE HECK?! and there is 0 customization, they might as well just use auto-level up, since you follow (literally) a rail anyway. speaking of rail, that's also the level design. there is no exploration, no cities, no "get to know the world you're in on your own", thus the setting is also very dubious and you only see what they show you.

Every X amount of Crystarium points you have literally dozens of options at the same time for even one "upgrade" to each character by as there's a section for each role the characters have so they can either go for certain abilities or go for stat-boosts,,etc. You eventually have several Accessory slots and the Weapons for each character work in different ways and interact with accessory combinations for more abilities which can have significant effects on the characters.

Can someone please make a video where you fight Odin or Shiva, and 'mash x to win'?

Quoted for truth. And this is coming from somebody who beat every hunt prior to unlocking the final level of the Crystarium.

you have a set rail for all characters with set options what they learn. you're also CAPPED at what you want to learn with story progress. it's artificial choice and very shallow at that. you learn everything anyway - without grinding, as you have no choices and fix roles.

the only customization was the accessory really, and that was rather generic. hell, FF7 and 8 had more customization, even tho you had auto-level up, at least you could make a character into what you want him to be.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but FFXIII didn't really change anything. They just distilled the essence of Final Fantasy(linearity, simplicity, presentation) to an absurd degree. And just like with alcohol, sometimes the more you distill something, the less palatable it becomes.
