Japanese developers never seem to release any racing games...

They come through on RPGs and fighting games but when it comes to racing, I rarely see anything from that side of the world.

The racing genre is firmly dominated by western developers.

They have quite a few racetracks over there (Motegi, Suzuka, and Tsukuba to name some) and invented a few internationally recognized motorsport competitions (like gymkhana and drift racing).

Gran Turismo is the obvious flagship Japanese racing series.

There's also Ridge Racer, the older Sega racing games (the newer ones tend to be Western productions), and the Nintendo racing games - Excite[whatever], F-Zero, and of course Mario Kart.

Most of those haven't seen recent installments.

Also the most recent Ridge Racer is western-made (from the producers of the FlatOut series, Bugbear Entertainment; also it's nothing like Ridge Racer at all).

Because they realized no racing game can be better than GT, so they don't need to bother with it.
