What matters more in an RPG, gameplay or story?

For me it's definitely the story, just look at FFXIII/-2 awful story with good gameplay, but the game still suck.

For an RPG (any style), in order of priority -

Plot/story
Characters
Setting
Style

Music is number 0. You need good music for everything, or even well used no music. And by good music, I mean music cohesive to the game's world.

Summer action flick music has no place in a puzzle game, for instance.

Honestly, it depends on the type of RPG. Not all RPGs are story driven, some focus on the game play to the exclusion of everything else. Some focus on the Story to an extent that the game play ends up being really simple. Both kinds are very fun.

Ideally though, I like my RPGs to have a mix of both. That's why I like stuff like Ni No Kuni or Dragon Quest VIII, or Final Fantasy (Except for FFXIII), because they have a nice balance of the two.

I used to think gameplay, but there isn't much point in investing a couple hundred hours into a game if it's got a bland story. I had that problem with Skyrim. Extremely overrated game. Combat was ok, but the story was pretty uninteresting for the most part.

Gameplay (esp. customizations) for me. I still care for story, just less care than gameplay.

It depends on the game.

For example, in a JRPG series like the Tales games, it's the battle system and characters.

In Xenogears the gameplay is secondary to the story.

Xenoblade is more world driven and etc..

For WRPGs, it's the same. Bioware and CD Project games are story driven, while Bethesda games are world driven again.

So yeah, for a genre as vast as RPG, I'd say there is no general thing that would make one category more important than the other. It boils down to preference.
