Filing for a patent and actually using it are two different things, companies file for patents for technologies that they don't always pursue. Why?

1. Its an insurance policy, if the industry starts swinging that way, they have the leg up on the competition.

2. Licensing, if they own the patent, anyone who wishes to make use of the technology has to pay them.

Filing for this patent just shows Sony is aware of what the devs/publishers are wanting and should things ever go to no-used-sales, Sony will already have the technology and license in place.
