POLL: Do you think Gamestop's opened/unsealed games are USED or BRAND NEW?

I actually prefer them selling opened games. Once I bought a game at Target, and all that was in the case was a CD-R and some newspaper.

The game was sealed, so it was obviously an issue with the factory.

Depending on the kind of shrinkwrap used for the game, it could very well be someone re-shrinkwrapped a game after gutting it with a home shrinkwrapper. Games from the publisher usually have that shrinkwrap where the two "ends" fold over on each other on either the spine or the opening edge, whereas "home shrinkwrappers" typically have that look where it was placed into a "bag" and then the edges were melted shut around it, and the corners stick out a bit from the case.

Trust me, I had to re-shrinkwrap a lot of stuff at my old job working in the game section. You cannot believe how many people would take the wrapping off a cheap non-security boxed game just to look at the manuals and crap. I'd make sure everything was there and intact before rewrapping them, but yeah - it sucked.

I'm pretty sure it was a factory job, since I'm assuming they put in newspaper to trick the scales and the game was behind a glass case and had only been released a few days previously.

ok, i'm kindly requesting that this board stop using the word 'shady'.

Comes up far too often, and relates to things that we as consumers, do to each other anyway.

If I go into GameStop on a whim and they try to sell me an open game as new, I ask them to get me a sealed copy or I want to pay the used price with the option to return. If that is unacceptable, I take my money to Best Buy or Amazon. I am sick and tired of GameStop and its crappy business practices and I will no longer accept them. Most of the time I call ahead to make sure they have what I want so I don't waste gas.

There is a way to take a stand, and it's with your wallet. If everyone did this, they might rethink some of their "strategies."

The policy is:

From a distributor, it's new. From a customer, it's pre owned.

What's so hard to understand about this?

Because it's hypocritical.

If they are new games (as in release) thn they open a few to put on the shelves. Reason, for display and so people can thumb through the instruction booklet to see if they want the game if they are on the fence about it. They also only sell this game if it is the last ones they have and they keep the disc in separate storage so no one steals it. Otherwise they grab an unopened one from behind the counter.

If they are used they at used.

Why don't people understand this? Seems such a simple concept to grasp O_o

Um it's obviously used.

I bought a NEW copy of xenoblade chronicles online from gamestop.com. They sent me an unsealed game. I sent them an e-mail and said they sent me a used copy when I ordered NEW, and guess what they then sent me a NEW sealed copy of xenoblade chronicles.

Now i have 2 copies for the price of one, lol

I once got a used copy of Dark Cloud online and it had been re-shrink wrapped again even though it had been clearly used so. No. Just because it's wrapped doesn't mean it's new, just means its wrapped -_-

And it's why I think they should go back to "new" and "pre-owned." Pre-owned implies previous owner, and in no way can an opened copy, opened by the store, have a "previous owner."

Now, that said, if I bought a new game that they put those little sticker-things on it, and I found the manual wasn't in there or was damaged or something, I'd take it to the store and ask them if there was anything they could do. I mean, I know accidents happen, so if they knock a buck or two off the price, then I'm cool with a crease on the front page or something.
