I don't really like the character design, but the battle system looks fun, and I want a new RPG

Yeah, each Tales game is different so you can jump in anywhere and start...besides the obvious sequels which there aren't a lot of.

Graces F is significantly different than most previous games in the series, but it's a good entry overall. It has a few quirky mechanics that previous games don't have, so if you want a simpler place to start, Tales of the Abyss or Tales of Symphonia are two of the best.

Graces is done primarily by Team Destiny..... this being the first Team Destiny game to be released in north america.

everything else released in north america is done by Team Symphonia.

their battle system designs vary greatly.

Team Symphonia's battle systems typically resemble each other.

Team Destiny gets rid of the TP management but in exchange, they have you manage in other ways.. in Graces, you need to watch the CC count and know how to replenish it through your actions. you also need to learn how to effectively evade to extend your combos etc...

in Rebirth, you have to actively manage the Rage gauge and the Force cube..

The out-of-battle mechanics vary greatly as well. I'd have to say that the Team Symphonia entries most resemble the average JRPG, while the Team Destiny entries allow for more variance, which can be a good or bad thing.

If you have a gamecube or BC Wii lying around, in my opinion if would probably be better to start off with tales of symphonia since that is like the "final fantasy 7" of tales games. (not saying its overrated or anything, but it was a lot of newer generation gamer's first tales game, basically the 1 that can get you hooked on the series if you are really feeling it).

Then from there, you can continue on to tales of the abyss, then if you have a 360 tales of vesperia. If no 360 then just check out tales of graces f.

Graces f is a great place to start. My first Tales was Legendia, which I didn't like, gave the franchise a second shot when I tried Tales of the World:RM, which was terrible and turned me off to the franchise. I decided to give Graces f a go and am loving it, and I am now a Tales fan. Graces f is cliched sure, but it's a well done cliche.

It's pretty much the worst Tales game, go for it.
