FF7 and FF10 had the best combat systems.

I and Xii were my favourites.

I, well it's the basis for all of the combat systems.
XII, can be altered to your choice.

VIII (8), if you didn't change it to pause mode (Can't think of the name in the options)then you're constantly smashing abilities at a high level. Kind of fun. I think that was the one im thinking about.

You're the hero Gamefaqs deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

I prefer the systems of
Vagrant Story
Grandia X-treme
and the Shadow Hearts series.

and even then there's far more battle systems to date...

Eternal Sonata, Resonance of Fate, Magna Carta, Persona, Mana Khemia, Xenosaga, Xenosaga 2, Xenosaga 3, Neptune mk2, Valkyrie Profile 2, Valkyrie Profile 1, and i'm sure there's tons i haven't mentioned....

12 trounces them both.

10 was good in concept, but not so great in execution.

7's was the most fun, it was "standard" but it had the best flow to it. The limit breaks were awesome, had the best bosses, hands down the best music, great speed and animations. Can't put my finger on it but some combination of the above made it the best.

I've said it here before that absolutely loved how FFX worked and I wish more games had a system like it.

the battle action was only used in about 4 fights.....

I agree TC. Although I feel that FF5's Job System allowed for more customization.

IMO, X's system is actually one of the worst. The Sphere Grid seems like a cool idea, but in practice it's actually almost 100% linear and allows little to no customization. FF7's Materia is clearly way superior (here you constantly have to choose which Materia to equip and how you lay them out matters a lot), and I would likely put FF5's Job System and FF8's GF system ahead of X as well.

The only good thing about X is switching characters midbattle, but even then, the game stupidly doesn't allow you to switch out a dead character, so you can have the ludicrous situation of being game overred despite 4 of your party members still being alive.
