does ps3 play older ps games like how ps2 played ps1 games?

I have a lot of old ps1 and 2 games that I wanted to play again but I do not have a console.

so should I buy a used cheaper playstation 2 or spend more money on a ps3 that I might also use to play some current titles?

Every PS3 plays PS1 games.

This... BUT, some of my PS1 games have emulation problems. Final Fantasy IV has colors flickering all over the place, and Chrono Cross can't be played on the fat models due to a game ending freeze not far into it... It works on the slim though, with only slight problems.

Chrono Cross freezes on me soon after I get Nikki in the party as I'm entering the mansion.

Are you using a fat? I played through the game on my slim. It froze at the same part yours did on my 40gb.

You could try to find a 60GB or 80GB PS3 that is in great condition. Then you could play all PS1-2-3 games on it

this has me confused. so not all ps3 can play ps1 games? in other words not all ps3s can read the original ps1 discs? only 60 and 80g ps3?

what other ways can ps3 play ps1 games? is there some program like steam that you can buy and d/l them?

Silent Hill has this issue where everytime you fire a gun, there would be an irritating loud noise and it would not stop until you swung a melee weapon. idk if its fixed but it was VERY annoying!

My copy of Final Fantasy VIII wouldn't work on the first ps3 we owned, I haven't tried it on my latest. It's apparently only an issue with the PAL platinum version.

Also I tried 2 copies of ready 2 rumble and neither of them worked on a ps3.
