Digital Card Battle comes closest for me. If anything it was ahead of it's time, as I'm sure a much better version could have been worked out now that online is actually a feature of the system.

This. It was so amazing as a kid. I still remember being fascinated that my Digimon could poop.

I used to play Digimon World 1 a lot at my friend's house when I was a kid. But I recently got to try it again... and yeah.. Together with Yoshi's Story those game would've been better of left as childhood memories.
