If games don't become art, then they will continue to be juvenile entertainment

Some games can be considered art. Other games can be considered anti-social forays into the mind of a child.

Honestly though, if we can't get something out there that the masses can eventually look at with the same kind of awe Film Critics give Citizen Kayne, we will eventually degrade into only safe-sequels.

If we had something like the oscars that rewarded developers for creating art, and if the community demanded such games, then we would see more effort put into our games and our games would be better for it.

The video game industry if far too immature at the moment.
Just look at the VGAs, that's the main audience of video games right now.

*Primitive Cave Man Mode* Personally whenever a movie I haven't seen wins an Oscar for best picture now a days I tend to avoid it because they're all as boring as watching paint dry. So no I don't think there should be a stereotypical arty awards show. Games are different from movies and other media, deal with it. The time will come when the old farts are gone and people start accepting video games.

I'm more worried about the new old farts being the adult versions of those prepubescent kids you hear on online games.

I agree. I don't see it getting better in that regard, but I would love to be wrong. I just think it's a generation thing. Times have changed, people have changed. I think the industry could still become more mature over time. But, I think what we're seeing now is going be the norm.

I think that's one, if not the main reason why indy titles really made it big in 2012.

Games may become "Art,", but again it will always be a secondary at MOST, it can't be any higher due to the fact that games are a PRODUCT first and foremost, they are design to sell, to hit as many people as possible. some go after a niche group, but that group is large enough to make a profit.

Unless something is made without any value to gain from it, it will never truly be art, it can't be, art can't have a price tag on it, it has to be done without those restrictions, it has to be done truly free without any thought or want of gain, and has to be done BECAUSE they want to for themselves, not for anyone else, and THEN when it loved for that, it is art.

As long as Games remain a product, then they can never truly become solely art, they can be Artistic, but never truly art.

I haven't played a game that felt like "art" in quite some time. Maybe since the PS2 era with games like Final Fantasy X and Silent Hill 2 and 3 (well, especially 2).
