Yes, because they have to have it on file if you choose to renew. It also at least gives them an idea that the person who's signing up is at least old enough to have a credit card.

Yes, this is correct. This is how my friend got PS+, until he started using my account. GameStop sells the PSN cards. I don't know about the 30 day trials, though.

You could use a debit card. Most have no fees and signing up for a bank account is quick and easy. I'm not sure if prepaid VISA cards work.

EDIT: Please note this was a couple of years ago. I'm not sure if the same rules apply today, but I can't figure why it wouldn't. It's sort of the point of the cards.

I just confirmed it via Sony's PlayStation site.

3 month and one year subscriptions do NOT require cc info.

30 day trial vouchers do... because they are not paid subscriptions.

If you buy a PS+ card, the subscription is already paid for without further stipulations.

So, go for it!
