No, it was a failure and the standard format is still DVD, Blu-ray will never be standard considering the spiderweb of formats.

Sure ,it was very expensive back in 2006 and it was a very big risk since it did not become standard yet ( was still competing with HD- DVD's) and it was a big contributor to that 599$ price tag.

but looking at it from today , did it pay off?

Since most "gamers" today care more about graphics than gameplay, I'd say it paid off. Blu-Ray holds so much data that they can easily make breath-taking visuals in games.

if i couldnt watch bluray movies on my ps3 i probably would have gotten rid of it a while ago.

Yup. Because the games are blu-rays and because it helped expedite the end to the HD DVD battle by putting blu-ray players it peoples homes who may not have bothered buying one otherwise.

In the long term it was a great investment. They don't really need another new disk medium for PS4 I feel. Plus, the HD film industry is all the more better for it.
