some half naked dude and his friends tried genocide on the dragons then retired to a life of mediocrity while humans are being cursed with undeath when they die because a bonfire is not lit. so some undead punk kills all of the dragon slayers and the half naked dude and relights the bonfire linking the world to the soul world so people would die instead of becoming undead.
edit: in my memory i keep picturing gwyn not wearing a shirt in the fight.
