Upgrading hard drive - delete data first?

I'm planning to upgrade to a 1 TB hard drive.

It seems really easy to do, but I've heard backing up/restoring from an external hard drive can take ages. Just wanted to know how true that is, and if it would just be better to delete all game data, PSN downloads, etc.... keep the saves and re-download all the data as I need it or whenever I have time?

How long would it take to back up/restore 300 GB of data to an external?

Depends on how fast your internet is and what speeds you get through PSN when downloading.

300 GB to back up and then reinstall will take you roughly 16-18 hours, roughly 8 hours to back up and then roughly 8 to put back onto the new HD.

I know because I just did that recently myself.

Ok, in that case I'll probably just delete it all. It's more important to me to have it up and running quickly rather than have everything on it to start. I can always download in the background while watching TV or overnight or doing other stuff, I would imagine.
