El Shaddai: Ascension to Megatron received subpar reviews if I remember correctly and I quite enjoyed it..

Too Human

It is a flawed game that didn't deliver 4 player coop as promised though.

Polite conversation should never include Politics, Religion or what constitutes an RPG.
Playing a game for it's story is like watching porn for it's story.

Alpha Protocol was mine. I was swayed by reviewers and my peers who had nothing but bad things to say about it. Each one neglected to tell me the story, dialogue system and locations were pretty damn solid. My only beef with the game was the gameplay control's which was very easy to overlook. An great game I wish I would have supported and bought it new.

Deadly Premonition. One of my favorite games ever and quite possibly the funniest game I know of.

Nier is probably my favorite game this gen along with Dark Souls. Deadly Premonitions is up there too.
I also enjoyed El Shaddai TC. Much more than a lt of all too similar triple A titles this gen.

And I guess the other big one would be Duke Nukem Forever. The whole time I was playing it I was trying to figure out what people's problems with it were, as I loved pretty much everything about it. Polish the graphics and tweak the aiming and it would have been perfect.

Alpha protocol
Deadly Premonition

Great games ignored by picky people.

Dante's Inferno

It's battle system was ripped from God of War but that doesn't make it bad. It also has a peerless depiction of hell and the descent downward actually feels like it has real depth. The last two circles were pretty awful but it still deserved a lot more then it got.

EDIT: Also Deadly Premonition got a lot of good press as well so it seems very well balanced.

El Shaddai was something else. I bought it on the cheap and after playing the first two levels I quit intending to restart the game with my girlfriend because it was so trippy and cool I felt she had to see it. Forgot to start again though but I'll get back to it. Nice pick. =-p

Critically panned games I loved this gen...I'm going with Risen and Risen 2.

Both have fairly clunky gameplay but the story and dialogue are terrific. Risen 2 is especially good (on PS3 btw). They're both like a poor man's Skyrim but in the 2nd one you're a pirate.

I agree... Nier and Dark Souls are both probably in my top ten this gen
