Given your list of example criteria, I'm guessing you're asking in terms of gameplay within the context of his game.

I'd say it's the warrior from the original FF. he basically makes the game a press confirm to win game because of the monstrous atk and def values he can get from his equipment. He does absurdly well with just confirm in every battle even in the original NES version, where attacks are not automatically redirected.

Yeah, halfway through the game, I was wondering why I didn't make another character a warrior. It would've made life easier.

Alternatively, Terra, because if you save Trance for the major fights she ends up with a ****ing insane magic boost when you use it.

In a sense tho, Sephiroth WAS a protag.

If anyone actually paid attention to the game, Sephiroth wasn't the true villain in the slightest.

There was a huge debate on the RPGs everything else board a while ago, about what defines a protagonist, whether it's the main character, or the character the plot centres around etc.
Baby, you're the only thing in this whole world that's pure and good and right and wherever you are and wherever you go there's always gonna be some light
