Resident evil 3 was the first game I owned on my own playstation when I was 15 or so. I had to work a whole summer in order to buy my own tv and playstation but I forgot to buy the memorycard...
You can imagine how terrified I was when nemesis and hunters chased me... having no memory card and knowing that if I died it was REALLY game over... not to mention I was still very fresh in the whole gaming business so most things impressed me more then it does today.

Even as a kid, I always thought RE series' jump scare moments were lame. Silent Hill 1-3, on the other hand, made me finish up each game much longer than expected since some of the moments freaked me out so much at the time. Ahh... good memories.

The Silent Hill games actually have interesting plots and endings.
For me, Resident Evil just keeps tossing out more "Hurr durr, ZOMBIES!1" junk. It stopped being scary a long time ago and it's just really silly stuff now. ReMake is spooky, but there's just something about Silent Hill that gets under your skin. I mean, sheez, the last Silent Hill game I finished, Shattered Memories, has one of the most legitimately shocking, surprising, and AWESOME endings I've ever experienced in gaming. It literally took the entire game and turned it completely on its head for me.
Yes, Book of Memories was a steaming pile of crap, but, really, you can't expect them ALL to be good, can you?
Silent Hill 1 is still damned scary, due to it's atmosphere and storyline. Silent Hill 2 not only expanded on the themes from the first, but legitimately pushed forward, and it's ending was unbelievable and shocking to say the least. Silent Hill 3 was great, a really worthy advancement of what we saw in SH1. Getting to the apartment was heartbreaking, and Heather is still one of my favorite protagonists. Silent Hill 4 was total crap, but it wasn't a real Silent Hill game so it doesn't count. Silent Hill Origins- Oh my GOD was that game scary. And on a handheld! I still get shivers trying to get past the nurses with my light off in the dark. I haven't finished Silent Hill HomeComing or Downpour yet because my PS3 died. :(
