Did you prefer the "pick up weapons" style or the "custom loadout" style in FPS?

In online shooter games, you used to all spawn with the same weapons, and have to grab weapons and powerups scattered through the map.

This had pros and cons. It allowed everyone to have a chance at powerful weapons and prevented situations where everybody is running around with uber weapons.

However, players sometimes it could give a player an unfair advantage where they would be able to grab the single bazooka on the map and obliterate the other players who only had the default weapon.

Most modern games allow you to simply choose what weapons you spawn with.

It depends on the scenario at-hand.

If we are constantly heading out to new locations, Custom Loadout.

If we were trapped, Procure-on-sight.

It depends really. Classes like SOCOM II? Then that. Otherwise, finding weapons. Custom loadouts usually mean level progression and unlocks. I like playing a game where no one has an advantage over anyone when you jump in to play. It's all equal.

I like custom loadouts, that way you always can have the weapon you are best at using. I am not a fan of making some guns require days of playing to unlock though.

I prefer the somewhat less old-school system of choosing between faction based weapons to loadout with.

Think: CoD 1 and 2, MoH Allied Assault, etc.
