Samus Aran is probably the most prominent female lead we've had.

And has NEVER needed fanservice. Tho, Nintendo sure gave it to us.

Oh come on! Lara Croft is the clear winner. She's just the most popular female gaming character, badass and a legend. Metroid Prime games may be better, but if you ask people (especially non-gamers) about Samus, most of them don't even know who that is. Everyone knows Lara and there's a reason she got her hollywood film, not Samus.

No disrespect to Samus but I feel she's pretty much the female equivalent of Link in that she's popular for the games she's in rather than the character herself.

Why is Samus Aran winning? She isn`t very well known, except to big Nintendo fans.
