Can the PS3 upscale video files from the HDD? Or do they need to be on disc?

Also, what formats can the PS3 play? Does it support .mkv?

I think the PS3 upscales video to what your PS3's display settings are set to. No, it doesn't support MKV. You would need to convert it from MKV to something else.

You can convert from MKV to another format?
I remember looking in the net for a long time for converters, But never found good ones
Does it work with PS3 Media Server?

PS3mediaserver is the greatest thing on this planet cept for beer maybe. It will transcode MKV to your PS3. For best results hardwire your PS3 to your network. Mkv2vob can be your best friend as well.

I've used a free tool called TSMuxer. Just drag your MKV file and select M2TS. It works super fast.
