Hardware Problem

I have an issue with my PS3 playing commercial dual-layer DVDs. When it tries to play the second layer content, it either freezes or plays that spot on the first layer. Tried multiple discs on different sets, so it's not a disc issue. Blu-rays, games, and regular DVDs play fine. It's a fat 60 GB that had the original BC for both PSX and PS2 games. Is it a dirty lens or is the laser crapping out or something else? Any insights and tips are appreciated.

That would be a laser issue, which could mean it's dirty or it's going bye bye, or more likely there's a defect with it that makes it incapable of reading dual layers.
