The select button is kinda like the scroll lock key. It's a vestigial key that had a quesitonable use in the past (menu selection), but now has a different use. It's just an extra button for menus or what not. We don't really need it anymore though with a touchpad, no. But it's more of a why not? If it fits, why not?

I don't know if we really need it but I've grown accustomed to it.

We don't really need buttons, MS showed us the light with their invention Kinect? Why do you ignore the future? Sony is stuck in the past with their baby toys with thumbsticks and tiger electronics.

Start is for Pause & Options. Select is for play-related menues, maps, scoreboards, etc.

Select is very necessary.

Its funny that when you have to select something you normally press X and not the actual "Select" button.

Regardless of what you want to call this button or that button, whether the button is necessary depends upon the game.

Some games use it, others do not. Does it matter if it is called A, B, C, X, Y, Z, Start, or Select?
