Because reviews noted that it was linear. Because the cutscenes added to the feeling of linearity. Personally I'll take a game like FFXII over FFX/FFXIII however FFXIII and FFX has my favorite story of any FF game save perhaps FFIV, though even then I think that X and XIII beat it.

Though I do agree that saying that you love FFX and hate FFXIII because of linearity is a bad reason.

There are a number of valid reasons in this topic, I was just curious. I'm not an opinion nazi. And are you kidding? Of course I expected a list like that, especially the paragraph afterwards-but I was surprised that there was so much constructive criticism before the stereotypical Internet pouter entered the topic. Congratulations, big guy.

FFX had a far better and more realised world for a start, one with a vastly superior geological sense of place. The game might have been linear, but it wasn't linear to the suffocating degree that FFXIII is. FFX still felt like an actual journey with a natural progression to it. Everything in FFXIII feels comparatively artificial, even when they throw you in that one town it only serves as superficial window-dressing. They just dump you in one area after another without any regard towards developing a player-connection to the world that you're supposed to be "saving". You can't even return to the areas that you've been to on Cocoon, not that they offered anything exciting in the first place. FFXIII has a lousy 'world'.
