How do the downloaded PS2 games look on HD TVs?

#1ChaosNeverDiedPosted 2/23/2013 2:26:55 PM
My PS2 games on my PS2 look pretty bad on my HD TV. For example, Champions of Norath has blurry words, and the graphics looks a little "fuzzier" than on an SD TV.

I was wondering if the downloaded versions of PS2 games look any better.

If the game supports 16:9 in the options menu, do that. Then in the PS Menu in game, set smoothing on and upscaling to Full Screen. I did that in Bully and Vice City and both look great.

Sweet. I was considering downloading Haunting Ground and War of the Monsters.

Where the hell is Haunting Ground on the store?

And now for something completely the same.

I've bought "classics" before on the store and I totally regret it. Anything I bought looked like garbage and I ended up just playing on an emulator.

Basically upscaled PS2 games, with smoothing(if you choose to enable it).

This has been covered extensively on the PS2 board.

PS2 on an HDTV

1. Get component cables for your PS2.
- The different between component and the original composite cables is night and day.

2. Use a THX certified movie DVD to calibrate your HDTV.

http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/thx-certified-releases

3. Activate widescreen in the game, if supported.
4. Activate progressive scan in the game, if supported.

Wikipedia lists some PS2 games that support widescreen and/or progressive scan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_HD_support

5. You'll probably have to turn the Sharpness down to zero, or
maybe 10% at this point.

6. Just start playing. Motion blur will handle most problems, and once
you get used to the way the games look, they'll start seeming better
and better.

More in depth there.

Some great looking games that support progressive scan.

Black*
Beyond Good and Evil
Ghosthunter*
God of War 1
God of War 2 - turn off softening before activating 480p.
Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando
Ratchet and Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal
Resident Evil 4*
Tomb Raider: Legend

* Hold X and Triangle during bootup to access 480p menu.

That was the exact question that popped into my mind right when I read this post.. I've been wanting that game to be on PSN forever! I just recently hooked up my PS2 just to play Haunting Ground which does look a little fuzzy even with component cables!

I got Vice City from PSN and was surprised how bad it looked.. But when I turned off the "trails" feature and put it on widescreen, it looks much better! Still not as clear as the PC version but good enough!

The 2 I've played Persona 3 FES and Odin Sphere both looked excellent on my 22' HD screen.
