How long until Sony pulls the plug on PS3 online games?

Not this year obviously,
however this does happen when new systems come out and also to old version of games.

We all know popular games that got taken offline

Namely Metal Gear Online although that was entirely Konami's fault, those cheap bastards.

True
How did sony handle PS2 online for popular games after the release of PS3?

Consider how long it took them to take Socom 2 offline, I wouldn't worry about it.

PS2 didn't have a network like PS3. Each PS2 online game had an isolated server. PSN didn't exist until PS3. And PSN Store and PS3 has lots of money being made. Sony isn't going to drop support for one of their biggest sources of profits. And remember even PS2 support continued over 2/3 though PS3's history.

This. FFXI is still up and running on the PS2 its just mainly the sports games that get shut off every year when the new one comes out.
