Kojima says MGS: Ground Zeroes may be too 'risky' to release

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima thinks that his upcoming entry in the solid stealth series may be too taboo-heavy to be published in its current form. And even if it does see the light of day, he's unsure if it will sell given its grim subject matter.

"I'm going to be targeting a lot of taboos, a lot of mature themes that really are quite risky," he said at a round table interview, as reported by VideoGamer. "I'm not even sure if I'm going to be able to release the game, and even if I did release the game then maybe it wouldn't sell because it's too much. As a creator I want to take that risk."

"Video games as a medium haven't matured very much at all in the last 25 years," Kojima explained. "It's always about killing aliens and zombies. Not that I don't like those kinds of games... they are fun, but I think games have a long way to go before they can mature."

"Over the past 25 year I have tried to work with the Metal Gear series to introduce more mature themes, but really it hasn't gotten there yet. Compared to movies and books it still has a long way to go... That's precisely what I want to try to tackle with Ground Zeroes."

While he's aware that this approach may not be commercially viable, Kojima, honey badger-like, doesn't give a s***. "I'm approaching the project as a creator and prioritising creativity over sales," he stated.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is slated for release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. No release date has been announced.

What do you guys think of this? This is also coming from him saying the old style of story telling in MGS games is outdated.. He has new ideas and ways to tell story instead of really long codecs and cut scenes.. I have read hes using MGS to tread new ground and test things for an unkown project.. Anyways...

I love that hes taking risks, I love MGS and its time for a lil change.. This is my favorite part "I'm approaching the project as a creator and prioritizing creativity over sales," This is how some games become legendary taking risk is a live or die thing.. if it strikes gold its a home run.

Whats your thoughts on all the recent talk from Kojima about his ideas for the future of MGS? He makes good points about most games

Exactly what are these "taboo and mature" themes?

I mean, what honestly could be put into this that every other controversial game hasn't done?

He's just saying that to get publicity so people get interested in it. If it does end up releasing (which it obviously will) it'll either be the same old stuff or it'll tackle those 'themes' in a horrible way and they'll think it is because of what they did and not how they did it as the reason for failure.

I know, right? I remember him going on about how his next game (presumably Ground Zeroes) would feature something involving a child that would be too taboo to discuss. Then Konami themselves put out SH: Downpour, wherein your character's son was molested, killed, then thrown in a lake. Seems like some false hype.

I wonder how many extremely mature "guy has diarrhea in a barrel" scenes we'll get in his next Metal Gear game. Kojima's unfunny poopie humor has been paving the way for maturity in games for the past 25 years.

Yeah, I admit I'm curious, but I'm a bit worried it's just ego stroking.
