Nintendo knows kids are their primary target and thus have a 5-drop rue during R&D phase. They make sure somebody can hold their product at chest height and drop it 5 times and it must still work.

Sometimes I think Sony makes their stuff easily breakable on purpose.

I can't believe not a single "helpful" person here knowing it won't start due to storage media I.e the hard drive not being present has informed you of the obvious steps to ensure it is your ps3 that has died.

Step 1. Open hard drive bay

Step 2. unscrew the hard drive bay.

Step 3. Remove hard drive

Step 4. Firmly reinsert hard drive

Step 5. Resell hard drive bay

Step 6. Turn on ps3

If you still get the error now then the ps3 needs a repair/replace.

Also this does not require opening up your ps3 as the hard drive is accessible via a removable cover so anyone can change them out. Doesn't bid warranty either.

YouTube your ps3 model on how to remove your hdd.

P.s this process depending in ps3 model will reformat the hard drive so your saves etc will be wiped.

From the error you have though its your only option beyond repair/replace.

Make sure you buy a new one ASAP. According to the "No BC!" kids, Sony are going to stop production of the PS3 as soon as the PS4 is released.
