I've tried numerous discs, but none are reading. System is up to date and everything. Was working fine this morning, but not so fine this afternoon. Any advice?

If it's anything like the PS1, maybe try turning it upside down?

Go to PlayStations website and request service. Youll be out a PS3 for 3-4 days tops. Same thing happened to me last year with PS3.

Couple of Questions for you TC...

What model do you have?
Do you hear any noises for the PS3 when you would expect it to start spinning the disc?
Do you get a solid blue light on the PS3 once the disk is inserted?
Does the blue light stay on when you take the disc out.

If you hear your system making the eject sound when it's reading the disc after you slide it in, then the BD is probably broken. Happened to my 120GB slim.

Slim model
the eject noise happens, but no disc comes out
haven't checked the blue light thing - reformatting the drive and have 5 hours remaining

Almost as much as a new system.

Yeah, it's the same problem with my slim, then. Local repairers asked me for $130 for the fix, but the ps3 had to be reformatted in the end meaning all is lost (you can still backup if you want). I ended up trading that slim with a brand new 160GB + $150.
