Can the PS3 play PAL movie Blu-rays?

I want to order some movies (Blu-rays) that are in PAL format and was wondering if the PS3 can read it?

There's no such thing as NTSC/PAL Blu-ray movies. Films are just stored as 1080p/24fps. NTSC/PAL is an issue only if you're outputting via analog (composite/component), and not via HDMI.

However, Europe is in a different BD region, so region-locked European movies won't play in an American PS3.

Oh, there may be another issue. If you're buying TV shows or poorly-encoded movies, they may come in the 1080p/50Hz format. The American PS3 does not support such format. You would need to get a compatible Blu-ray player. Here's a helpful list:

Even if the player is compatible, if it does not convert it to 60Hz, then you need to get a compatible TV too.

Just waiting for it to arrive.

I know the movies will work because the discs are region free but the extras are supposedly in a PAL format based on the review. I'm using an HDMI cable for my video, will the extras work on my PS3?

I also have a regular Blu-ray player in another room that also uses HDMI. Will that player play the extras?

If the extras are in "PAL" format (1080p/50Hz), then check the list I linked to in my second post. They won't play on the PS3, though. That's for sure.
