Some PS3 games have this feature... like the new Tomb Raider digital version.

Thanks to game sharing and multiple consoles having the one account, they need a way to prevent people sharing their game instead of buying it.
It's not the same as persistent online.

Blizzard games have the same problem, but no one petitions them. I should know, I owned Diablo 2 & 3 and both launches were huge messes.
