Looks like my theory is true: PS3 owners tend to care less about games

http://www.gamespot.com/news/nielsen-gaming-takes-back-seat-on-ps3-6405303?

Based on what I've seen among the Sony community, I've long suspected that PS3 owners overall tend to be more interested in the other stuff the console does (like Blu ray viewing, video streaming, etc.) than the actual games that are being released.

Game sales have suggested that at times....But now there is actual survey data starting to show it as well.

I guess it makes sense, in a way. I'm just not sure how this jives with the assurances I've consistently gotten from PS3 fans saying that...unlike the competition...the PS3 is a "gamers console."

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I use my PS3 more for "other stuff" than for games right now. But it does run in cycles. I'll play a game when a good one is released and then I find myself completely uninterested in that aspect on the PS3 until something really good comes along. Most recently, I've used it more for Netflix than anything else just because it's hooked up to the TV that I want to watch it on.

I've never once used my PS3 to watch a movie or to use Netflix, and I've only used it once to watch YouTube videos way back when. It absolutely is a gamer's console for me. All i use it for is games.

Nice. So the PS3 is the popular choice for alternative entertainment, and the fact that it has awesome games is a bonus.

It's so popular for that "alternative" stuff that people seem to care more about that than they do the gaming functions.

Sad fact, that is what happens when your exclusives aren't up to snuff.

That's likely a part of the explanation for many people....
