Industry must lessen the 'obscene levels of violence' in games, says US Senator

#101ChipChippersonPosted 3/19/2013 11:50:59 PM
I don't want to single out video games per se but what I think is being completely overlooked is the general crudeness in our culture overall. We're rude, selfish, ignorant and we're loud, proud and aggressive about it.

We have a media where human debris is regularly given tv shows and an outlet, our news is Entertainment Tonight-lite, absolute scumbags are held up as celebrities to be emulated, our heroes are dumb as a sack of bricks jocks, ignorance is celebrated and values/intelligence are laughed at, we have a society designed for the stupidest among us that nature would have killed off long ago, our social services system rewards absolute and utter irresponsibility, discipline in schools and at home isn't allowed, everyone is so hopped up on meds and dope they don't even know what planet they're on, etc ....aaaand deep breath...

Tldr: We have an entire doped-up culture and society built on aggressive ignorance and lowest common denominator barbarism, it's disingenuous to point the finger solely at games. For gods sake we live in an age where pajamas and slippers are acceptable attire to go out in.

I bet all the shooters had more in common than violent video games. Like eating food, or using the toilet, perhaps they all had clothes on too. The problem with this argument is that games are common items in households now. Just like other forms of entertainment such as movies and books they have no causal link because they are common everyday items.

It's like saying because of games urban crime has gone down. However, it is too easy to simply do that. There is more going on than just one cause to these incidents and some of it could be bad parenting, desensitization, psychological trauma, Over stimulated, etc The list is simply huge and it is up to society to offer the resources in helping each other to create a system of preventative measures. Putting all or even the majority of the blame on one form of medium is ignorant.

The shooters do have something in common: almost all of them were either on or withdrawaling from anti-depressants and anti-psychotic meds.

''In a study of thirty-one drugs that are disproportionately linked to reports of violence toward others, five of the top ten are antidepressants. These are Prozac, Paxil, Luvox, Effexor and Pristiq. Two other drugs that are for treating ADHD are also in the top ten which means these are being given to children who could then become violent. One could conclude from this study alone that antidepressants cause both suicidal thoughts and violent behavior. This is a prescription for mass shootings.''

On one hand this senator is a complete idiot. On the other anyone that thinks parenting boils down to saying no for 2 minutes is a complete idiot too. Do you really think if you forbid CoD in the house the child will just give up? He'll obtain it somehow or play it somewhere else. A lot of you apparently don't understand that parenting is a 24/7 job and that it's impossible to observe your child 24/7. Parenting is teaching right from wrong , manners , etc. It's about teaching the basics and guiding them, not smothering them. I don't even have kids and know this. And then we have the usual politically correct BS about how parents shouldn't swear. It's like this site feels that good parenting is sheltering. I grew up playing Mortal Kombat and watching R rated movies when I was 5 and turned out to be an A student and generally a great person. I also was using the illegal cable to watch porn when I was like 11 behind their backs with friends. It's not that my parents weren't paying attention , but that again it's impossible to chaperone 24/7. I feel so sorry for anyone growing up in this politically correct nonsense era.

Don't get me wrong though , there are definitely some parents that legitimately suck. The signs aren't "zomg she swore at his son because he did something wrong!" or something equally stupid

I definitely AGREE with this though. I listened to some vulgar music in my day but I'm also male. Some of the lyrics in pop music today though that my 12 year old sister is singing along too unknowingly what it means is kinda disturbing. It's very sad that artists like Kesha can be role models with Nicki f****** Minaj judging music on American Idol. I may not like Taylor Swift but atleast there I can find the appeal and even respect it. And then the current generation actually idolizes jackasses like Charlie Sheen, Chris Brown, etc. It's sad

As George Carlin put it, "They're thinking about banning the toy guns but they let you keep the real ones."

There's probably a lesson to be learned from all this, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.

I got tired of reading everything and ran out of coffee mid way so i'm just gonna skip to the end and apologize if i repeat anything said.

I admit to much unnecessary violence in games. If that though is how the creator want's it to be then that's okay. I'm not sure if there is a parental lock on the console or not so games of certain rating can not be played. Even if there were parents would have to be part of the account creation process and set it up themselves. then if said adolescent waste money given to them on a game they shouldn't be playing then it's their own fault. Yes then they can just take it over to Timmy's house or factory reset the console right after said action was taken sense most kids no more or just enough to get around said counter measures. Then again there should be an administrative account sat up or the main account made can't have any major settings changed or resetting unless knowing via the password. which may already be I haven't really looked.

next no movies and games are not the same. yes the violence portrayed though in one you do the act via button and the other via the mind. it is still handled in the mind the same way if you ask me in both. any kids will portray him or herself doing such actions.

I do not believe the creator's of games OR movie's should be made to hold back to portray what they want to get across. Sadly and very difficultly the parents have to play their role and not use either items as a form of babysitting and yes I have a 4 year old daughter. I also enjoy playing violent games and make habit of not playing scary or violent things in front of her or tell her i'm about to and if she minds playing in her room. she'll let me know when she's coming out and on more than one occasion she has said daddy i wanna stay in the den so i found something else to do. I also play games with her that are appropriate for her and will be active and am active in all media choices she chooses. yes being only 4 see is very capable of selecting netflix video's to watch and just yesterday i was sitting on the couch and heard futurama playing on the tv. I went in and she was like daddy i'm watching a new cartoon and i told her i think though it's a cartoon is a little old for her and maybe when she is older but for now lets something else. Luckily though i was brought up in the era of computers and know what to look for but not everyone was.

I am 30 and happily married 10 years almost now. got married young because my now wife was a foreign exchange student to America. after much red tape and a year later we got married. why do i tell this though it's no form of valid proof it's to show i'm not just some kid spewing. sorry for the paragraphs.

And why stop there? Censor movies too. Censor music. Censor comic books. Censor television. Censor the planet. It's clearly what these grey-haired degenerates want most in this world, to muzzle every single form of expression that doesn't fit into their own set of values, values that might as well be social goddamned relics, so ancient and fragile they deserve a Smithsonian exhibit protected by armed guards so everyone can gawp and marvel at living, breathing dinosaurs.

In this topic I'm a homicidal plumber stomping everyone I meet's heads in. Because obviously my child mind couldn't comprehend I was jumping on things that didn't exist nor that it wasn't me stomping on those poor creatures. And my child mind couldn't possibly understand that I weren't killing real civilians in GTA2 or 3.

Somehow my child mind did understand though, and so have everyone of my friends child mind. So the logic of "children can't grasp it's not real" seems to be incredibly stupid. And just typical US politics.
