Your favorite gaming set-pieces?

It seems that set pieces and scripted moments get a bad rap but personally I love them. I've played many games over just to experience those awesome moments again

My favorites include:
- Uncharted 2 - helicopter attack/the collapsing building
- Tomb Raider - crossing the bridge, climbing the tower to the helicopter as they're destroyed
- Crysis 2 - tie between the tidal wave and when the Ceph attack the bridge
- Black Ops 2 - jetpack free fall as the planes get destroyed around you
- Modern Warfare 2 - dodging the falling helicopters after the EMP
- Vanquish - collapsing overpass during Vertigo
- God of War 3 - opening assault on Olympus with Titans

Set-pieces are alright as long as they don't break up the flow of the game too much and rely more on the games' actual gameplay mechanics rather than random button presses.

Totally agree with you. The best are ones that keep you in full control of your character a la Uncharted and the new Tomb Raider but I don't mind more restricted scripted moments as long as they provide an experience that the general control scheme couldn't.

In Max Payne 3, where you might grab a chain to lift you up, and the game goes into slow-mo. Or when you jump on that cart and you roll in slow-mo, and pick the enemies off

The opening to GOW 3. To me that's still the greatest and most epic moment in gaming history.

This.

No game, not even Uncharted 2, has matched the cinematic majesty of that opening. I seriously felt like I was interacting with a Hollywood blockbuster.

And before people whine that these are games not movies, the gameplay was as ever amazing.

One of my favorites in terms of scale and scope.
My other two favorite openings are Bioshock's descent to Rapture (mysterious, intriguing, amazing art design) and Uncharted 2's waking up in the hanging train (just insane intensity from that opening moment)
