Question about a Hard Drive Swap (n00b question)

#1MrcTOtheJPosted 3/21/2013 12:03:09 PM
So next month I hope to be swaping up from my old 80GB to a 250GB 7200RPM HD.

And I was wondering if I get a SATA to USB cable would I be able to put all of my info from the 80GB right onto my 250, Game installs, DLC and everything?

Or maybe just transfer it all into the 250 and load it in there, either or.

Thanks in advance.

Probably be better to either Image it across, or just backup.

just use the backup utility, swap HDD then restore. it will copy everything.

Well I would back it up somewhere...but I don't have anything to back it up to the biggest USB drive I have is 4GB, unless I can just dump it into my PC.

Also another noob question, what's imageing it across is that just porting it over or what? (Sorry not the techeist guy out there, I'm trying to learn something from this)

Nope, you need to backup to something else.

If you can't get a big enough external USB device, delete everything you can't get back (basically your game saves).

- Delete all your installs, PSN games, etc.
- Backup to an external USB.
- Swap hard drives.
- Restore from external USB.
- Reinstall and redownload games.

That'll be a bit of a pain, seeing as I'll have to buig friends to use their net to redownload DLC and patches for games, but I'm running on my last 10 gigs here.

I have enough to back up my saves which is the real important part everything else, patches, music, DLC I can get back no issue.

That said it'll be at least a month untill I get arround to doing this (have other things to buy ATM) so I have time to find some with a big enough external drive to just port it all over via the back up.

Thanks for all of the infromation everyone.

Don't go 250, seriously. You'll only pay $15-$20 more for a Western Digital 750 gig over a 250, and you'll never need HD space again. I have this in mine, and I've got something like 80 full games on the HD with 280 gb left.

It's actually only $5 more than the 250 gb model of the same hard drive on Amazon right now. As far as backing up your stuff, you can probably get all your DLC and games off the hard drive with this

You're still under $100 even with the 750 gb drive from Amazon. If you have any questions, feel free to respond, I've got a little bit of a side business installing PS3 hard drives that came out of me changing out hard drives for myself and a friend, I usually install 1 to 2 a week on all models.

This is the one I was thinking about geting.

750 DAMN, Though I personally don't need more than that, as I don't download things to often though I will consider the 750 as that's allot, of data for a good price. (Only about $10 more than this one)

As for the USB drive, if no one has one I can use (I have the plebian 4GB version of the same one lol) I should get it, as it's allways nice to have a large gig flash drive for this reason alone lol.

Look at it this way. With a 750, you'll never need to worry about shuffling and deleting installs to make room. Also, don't get a 7200 RPM, you need to look at 5400 RPMs. there's potential for the faster HDs to cause heat issues depending on your specific model.
