safe to leave a PS3 on for 8 straight hours?

Not arguing with precise speeds here, but I think the TC was implying that a 17 GB download was taking him 8 hours, when an ethernet cable can cut that to around an hour or two at most.

An Ethernet cable will only speed up LAN connections. It's not his local/wireless connection that will be the bottleneck though, it will be his broadband connection.

So in his case, unless he's copying data from a local server (which he's not) then using an Ethernet cable (in this case between his modem and PS3) wouldn't actually make any difference.
