Why did SquareSoft and Enix merge to form Square Enix about 10 years ago?

Why couldn't they just stay as two separate companies and still both make games? Wouldn't it have been better for everyone?

Why? Because rather than compete with each other and be forced to actually do good work, they can merge, destroy each other's largest competitor and sit back to make mediocre games, knowing they have no one to take them on.

Hindsight is 20:20.

In merging they each lost their greatest competition and their reason for trying to make great games.

Because Square was about to go bankrupt.

Square wanted to buy Enix because it was its biggest competitor. When it comes to RPG sales in Japan, Square and Enix were by far ahead of everyone else. Do you know that of all the great PS1 games, Dragon Quest VII was the best selling one in Japan?

But Square also bought other companies like Quest (Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle), which was before the merger with Enix, and Taito.

Isn't Taito owned by Atari?

"They merged because enix wasn't really that popular here in the USA but they were Square Softs number one competitor in Japan with the Dragon quest sires. So they basicly merged for the money and changed the name to Square enix"
