Choose one-- arguably the best games in their respective series, which one would YOU pick as the better game?

I'd have to go with Dragon Quest on this one-- sure the silent protagonist was a negative, but the giant 3D overworld, the memorable characters and the plot was great. Even if the plot itself was standard and generic, it was fun every step of the way.

FFVII

Reason being the only Dragon Quest I've played is VI (even though I own most of them).

Dragon Quest VIII

It aged well, unlike Final Fantasy VII

I never played Dragon Quest 8. I got tired of the games because they feel so samey.

Comparing a Ps1 game with a technically superior Ps2 game.

Very fair indeed.

DQ 8 had the more expansive world (seriously, holy crap) and better graphics, but FFVII wins in just about every other category. Especially in terms of battle mechanics, story and characters.

Final Fantasy VII by far.

Dragon Quest VIII had great visuals and a nice soundtrack, sure, but that didn't save the archaic gameplay design with the savepoints, the generic cast of characters, the insanely poorly-paced and dull story, padded out game length, or the run-of-the-mill turn-based combat.

It's a bit unfair comparing a PS2 game with a PS1 game but either way I voted for DQVIII since it is my favorite JRPG of all time.

Dragon Quest VIII

It's been 16 years and I still don't see what people liked about Final Fantasy VII. Awful graphics, soundtrack, short and some of the most unlikeable characters I've seen. The combat system is good...But even that was done better in many Squaresoft SNES titles.

There are many games from the same time that are as good or better many games of this gen.

It is fair...Gameplay hasn't evolved that much...and if you're simply judging it on looks, Then...Yeah.
