The term Metroidvania is stupid...

Good call on the Wonder Boy series. Monster land, too. I don't believe I ever got to play WB 3. I need to check it out.

Sadly it seems like PS3 doesn't have this one (they do have Monster Land and Monster World, the games immediately before and after it). It is available on the PS2 Sega Ages Monster World Complete Collection (in English), though that's Japan only so you need an import-capable PS2 to play it.

Alternatively it is on the Wii Virtual Console if you have one.

Since "Metroidvania" actually fits the games they refer to, it works and makes sense.

No, it's absurd. By your logic I can call the "genre"

Rytroid... and it, too, would fit the games thet refer to.

Metronic... would also fit the games in question.

I can go on.

You can, but you shouldn't. Stupidity shouldn't procreate further.

And what the **** is Rytroid?

Did your brain break?

Stupidity...?

Rytroid and Metronic both sound better than Mwtroidvania...

Rygar + Metroid = rytroid

Metroid + Bionic commando= metronic

Deal with it, Ash.

Well to be honest it's not uncommon for people to refer to genre combinations based on notable games having that designation.

Compare "Roguelikes", which are named after the game "Rogue", even when they don't closely approximate its mechanics. They're really a specific type of Strategy RPG (Strategy / Dungeon Crawler), but that doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.
